Historical Background

The foundation of Acharya Narendra Dev Library was laid in 1959 through the vision and initiative of Shri Chandrabhanu Gupta, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. It was established to honor Acharya Narendra Dev, a renowned freedom fighter, educator, and socialist thinker. Initially, the library was housed at 2-Rana Pratap Marg, near Moti Mahal. As the library’s importance and collection grew over time, a need for expansion and modernization was felt. In 1984, it was relocated to its present location on the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors of Chandrabhanu Gupta Navchetna Kendra, situated at 10, Ashok Marg, Sadullah Nagar, Narhi, Hazratganj, Lucknow – 226001. This move allowed the library to serve a broader audience in a more spacious and organized setting.

The library boasts an impressive and diverse collection of books, journals, periodicals, and newspapers in Hindi, English, and Urdu, making it a multicultural and multilingual repository of knowledge. The collection is regularly updated to keep pace with current academic and literary trends.

- Access: Borrowing privileges and full reading room access.
General Membership:

- Access: Same benefits as student members, suitable for working professionals and scholars.
Monthly Reading Card:
- Fee: ₹25 per month
- Access: Access to the reading room and periodicals section without borrowing privileges.

Note: Valid photo identification and address proof are required at the time of registration. As of the latest available records (2014–15), the library served 393 members, including regular, student, and monthly cardholders.

Holidays: The library remains closed on all public holidays and during unforeseen administrative closures.
