Overview

Tagore Library, the central library of the University of Lucknow, is a beacon of academic excellence and intellectual heritage in India. Named after the great poet, philosopher, and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, the library stands as a vital pillar supporting the university's educational and research activities.

Established in 1920, Tagore Library originated from the prestigious Canning College Library, which itself was a hub of learning even before the University of Lucknow came into being. Over the decades, the library has grown into one of the oldest and largest university libraries in India, serving students, researchers, and academicians across disciplines.

Historical Significance

The foundation of the present Tagore Library building was laid in 1937, and it was officially inaugurated in 1941.
After India gained independence, the library was renamed in honor of Rabindranath Tagore, who had personally visited Lucknow University and delivered a lecture in Bennett Hall in 1922.
The name symbolizes the university’s commitment to fostering artistic, literary, and scholarly pursuits.

Tagore Library houses an impressive and diverse collection of academic materials:

Books: Over 5.25 lakh (525,000+) books covering a wide spectrum of disciplines—Humanities, Sciences, Commerce, Law, Education, and Social Sciences.
Journals: A repository of more than 50,000 journals, including current periodicals, historical archives, and subject-specific magazines.
Dissertations and Theses: Nearly 10,000 Ph.D. and D.Litt. dissertations submitted by scholars of the university.
Rare Manuscripts and Artifacts: The library boasts a precious collection of ancient manuscripts, miniature paintings, sculptures, old maps, and numismatic collections (rare coins).
Digital Resources: Access to 10,000+ full-text electronic journals and multiple databases via UGC-INFONET and INFLIBNET.
Shodhganga Integration: More than 8,700 digitized theses are made available to researchers through the Shodhganga platform.

One of the largest in India, the Cyber Library at Tagore Library provides:
